2014 has been my best year yet. I know everyone says that, but it’s really true. This was the year I really grew as a photographer and business owner, and I focused in on what I truly loved doing. “Simple focus” is what comes to mind because this year was about keeping things simple and focusing in on my clients. I simplified my processes, workflows, edits, and gear for better results, and focused on creating work that excites me.

I shot 30 weddings and elopements this year. I traveled to Hawaii, Cancun, San Francisco, Houston, and Dallas. I also did over 30 portrait sessions, including engagement, bridal, pre-wedding, and proposals. That basically means I took a lot of pictures, did a lot of editing, and took up a lot of hard drive space. I also upgraded to the Nikon D750, which is a crazy camera that basically does magic. More thoughts on this later…maybe.

I love keeping things simple, and this year I got to do that even more. One example is that I switched back to working from home. I loved having an office, but the benefits of working from home outweighed the benefit of having an office. My commute time has gone back to 0 minutes. Thank you to all the couples who have met with me in coffeeshops over this past year!

Another area of simplifying is my gear choice. I’ve learned that less is more, and that includes bringing less gear to my portrait sessions. I used to bring all sorts of flashes, flash stands, and assistants to help with my engagement and bridal sessions, but now I just come with myself and two cameras/lenses.  This gives me more freedom to focus on capturing emotions and connecting with couples at engagement sessions. Instead of thinking about my next lens or next lighting set up, my focus is on the environment around me, the amazing couple I’m in front of, and breaking down any barriers that may exist.

My other focus in 2014 was creating work that excites me, but what does that even mean? It’s so important that I am excited about the work I create by challenging myself and giving my couples my best work possible. This past year I did that through keeping updated on techniques, continuing to educate myself as a business owner and photographer, and by pushing myself creatively. Thank you to all my couples who trusted me to try new things and simply be creative.

I got to meet so many amazing couples this year, and I’m so blessed to be able to capture these moments that last for years to come. It amazes me how many lives I get to be a part of and touch through photography. Through each wedding, I’m reminded that I get to do more than just take pictures. I’m creating memories, capturing moments, and helping loved ones be remembered for years to come. That’s always my goal when I take pictures, and I’m so blessed to have been able to do that a lot this past year.
